PAST PLEASURES OF 2019
We sadly said farewell to Motswiri Camp, in the Okavango Delta, where I have been going for most of its existence and which now is heading into a new incarnation with a new owner. We were sent off with an evening of African songs from our hosts, and tried valiantly to hold up our — predominantly Canadian — side with a round of “Land of the Silver Birch.” Quite successfully, we all felt.
The visit there was very unusual because there was NO water on the concession. The drought, and small earthquake in the east of the Okavango Delta that had tilted the land, were sufficient to drastically change the water flow into the area. However, the trade-off was that we got to see much more of the land than I’d ever seen before, with some wonderful animal sightings. The scene below was one. A herd of over a hundred elephants with several very new babies came towards us late one evening, raising a cloud of Delta dust. To the left of this group was a single buffalo bull ambling slowly towards them, and from which they turned and fled. As the rest departed post haste, encouraging the wee ones to hurry on, this teenager stood his ground for a moment. Perhaps to thumb his nose at the intruder?
Onward in 2021 to a wetter water wonderland: Setari Camp!
The Northwest Passage trip in August was exciting and educational, and was full of stunning landscapes and unfamiliar animals. I never realized how huge this country of mine (Canada) is! I’m eager to get back, and will let you know what’s afoot.

Studio Retreat
If you want a rest/retreat/holiday about 40 minutes north of Ottawa, consider time out in my studio retreat. It’s available year-round for short term visits. Unavailable during workshops, I’m afraid, but there’s a good collection of Airbnb options in the area.
